A must read! Tricks and scams

Example number 1

On good Architect's/Designer's building drawings, they specify certain materials to be used, to keep in with current building standards. For example, 100mm thick sheet of insulation, 200mm timbers, 12.5mm of plasterboard, 150mm concrete slab or a meter depth of concrete foundation. Rogue or cowboy builders use thinner materials or lower levels of concrete to save them time and sometimes thousands of pounds. This almost always leaves the construction sub-standard and in some cases dangerous.

Example number 2

Some builders are good sweet talkers and can make you believe anything, especially if you know nothing about building. When removing an existing lean-to from a building, the wall plate is normally bolted to the brickwork. In some cases, bricks come loose and have to be re-cemented in. A scam builders use on their clients, is telling them that all the brick work cement has corroded and is dangerous. Therefore more sections of the brick work will have to be removed which will lead to expensive major work. Most customers often feel awkward about getting a second opinion or a second quote because of upsetting their relationship with their builder, leaving the customer unaware they have been ripped off.
