While working as a builder, I heard many stories from customers on how they or someone they knew had been ripped off by builders. Then one night, I watched a programme presented by Melinda Messenger called 'Cowboy Builders'.
The episode which made me first come up with the idea for checkabuildersquote.com was about a lady who lived with her teenage son. She wanted a single story rear extension, in which she had re-mortgaged her house for and put some of her life saving towards. She employed a builder that was working on an extension down her street. She said she liked him and gave him the chance to build her extension. She gave him around £30.000 in cash.
The builder started her extension then after some weeks left the job unfinished and totally unsafe. He had done such a terrible job, the whole extension was condemned. When Melinda and her team looked closely at what he had done, they were appalled at how dangerous it really was.
When Melinda's team confronted the building inspector who was overseeing the job, he said it wasn't his responsibility that this had happened. I immediately felt a sense of injustice... If the building inspector who was overseeing this job had not flagged up any risks or abnormalities in the builders work, then who should this lady have trusted? I was angered by the lack of support in which the building inspector had given, and felt truly sorry for the lady in which had been ripped off over £30,000. (Melinda and her team did give the lady and her son a brand new extension and also managed to track down the cowboy builder that ripped her off. Unfortunately, no money was ever retrieved).
That's when I decided to create checkabuildesquote.com. checkabuildesquote.com is the only company that helps just the customer. We are totally on your side. However, having been a builder for most of my career, I have to state that we are not against builders at all.
